Memunatu Kamara – Master Farmer Memunatu Kamara and Champion for Change
For ten years, Memunatu Kamara has worked the soil with
determination, resilience, and a deep belief in the power of agriculture
to transform lives. A resident of Makarie village in the northern part of
Sierra Leone, Memunatu is more than just a farmer—she is a leader, a
learner, and now a trainer to others, thanks to her journey with the
Regional Rice Value Chain Project (RRVCP).
“I want them to see
that with farming,
you can become
somebody. I am an
example.”
Before joining RRVCP, Memunatu’s
farming efforts were limited by lack of
support and resources. “I was farming,”
she says, “but I wasn’t getting the benefits.
It was hard.” Things began to shift five
years ago when she became part of the
RRVCP program.
Through the initiative, she gained access
to training, tools, and knowledge that
significantly improved her rice production.
Her commitment and performance didn’t
go unnoticed. Memunatu was selected
and trained as a Master Farmer—a role
she proudly embraces today. “As a
Master Farmer,” she explains, “I help
teach others what I’ve learned—how to
plant, how to weed, how to use improved
methods. I feel proud when I see other
women learning from me.”
Beyond the field, RRVCP has
empowered Memunatu economically
and socially. She is now able to
support her children’s education, pay
for healthcare, and save. “We are not
just farming,” she shares. “We are
saving, we are learning business. It’s
changing our lives.”
What makes Memunatu’s story
especially powerful is her role in
inspiring other women to see farming
as a real livelihood. “Farming is not for
the uneducated or the poor,” she says.
“It is for anyone who wants to grow
something for their future.” Her dream
is to expand her farm and support
more young people, especially girls, to
join agriculture.
Memunatu Kamara’s journey is a
shining example of how investment in
rural farmers, especially women,
creates ripples of impact—improving
lives, strengthening communities, and
feeding the nation.
